Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a practice that dates back 2,000 years to ancient China. This medicine looks at the entire person as opposed to focusing only on what disease or dysfunction they are currently experiencing. The point of the medicine is to bring balance back to the system as a whole.
How can acupuncture help you? Your acupuncturist will ask many questions to get a more holistic picture of you as an individual and then try to identify the root of the problem. By treating the root, the branch or symptom clears up and goes away.
Acupuncture is best used in a preventative manner, keeping your system in balance as opposed to waiting until your system is so disharmonized that disease has set in. That being said acupuncture can certainly assist you in harmonizing your system regardless of your baseline health when treatment starts.
A variety of tools are used in acupuncture to help facilitate well being and health; some of them don't even involve needles. Your acupuncturist will work with you to determine which modalities will be most beneficial to you and whatever problem you are dealing with.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is deeply relaxing and the majority of the session is spent in a relaxed and quite state while listening to soothing music or sounds. Although at times there may be a small bit of discomfort with needle insertion this sensation, when it does occur, should only last a second or two at most. After the insertion of the needle your practitioner will gently manipulate the needle to obtain the sensation of qi which could feel like: heaviness, warmth or a slight zing to name a few possible sensations. This sensation also usually only lasts a second or two.
The qi sensation is the nervous system's recognition that the needle has been inserted and is a sign that it is doing its work. The actual insertion of the needle should not be painful in and of itself, in fact acupuncture needles are much smaller than needles used for injections because they are not hollow. These very fine needles are designed to move swiftly past the area of the skin where the nerves are most abundant, thus making the insertion more comfortable.
Clients should wear loose fitting clothing so that it is easily moved out of the way for needling and should always eat something before their acupuncture session to ensure that the body has the reserves needed for treatment. Our Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities include:
Cupping: is a great way to relieve muscle tension and stress. It can also help with asthma and help to prevent or speed the recovery of the common cold.
Gua Sha: is similar to cupping but the effect is created by scraping a smooth tool along the skin to relieve muscle tension, reduce inflammation and fever.
Electrical Stimulation: is the addition of electrical impulses to the needles that have been inserted. This is a wonderful way to reduce pain in both acute and chronic injury.
Auricular (ear) acupuncture and seeds: any organ or area of the body can be treated by stimulating points on the ear. This can be accomplished by either needling the ear or placing small seeds that the client can keep on for several days to continue stimulation which is very helpful with chronic pain or illness.
Moxa: is a Chinese herb that is burned near the body or on the end of the needles to add energy and warmth into the body. It is very helpful to boost the immune system, help heal injury by reducing inflammation and overall support of the system.
